History of Rotterdam
The name “Rotterdam” first shows up in historical scripture in 1250. Named after a dam that was raised on the small river the ”Rotte” by a few fishermen it soon grew as a trading center for the nearby area. By 1340 Rotterdam had grown to 200.000 inhabitants and received “city rights”. It’s location near the North Sea and it’s connection with the main rivers in the Netherlands were a major factor in the development of the city.
In World War II, the city was almost completely destroyed by air bombardments. Only a few historical buildings were saved. Reconstruction started right after the war. The harbor area was expanded as well as the role of the city as one of the main harbors and logistical points in Europa as well as the rest of the world. It’s unique location and culture are still a driving force behind this growth. Today, Rotterdam has 585.000 inhabitants from various ethnical backgrounds. This makes the city a pleasant place to live and work. If you are looking for a vibrant city with modern architecture and an interesting nightlife, you have come to the right place!
